Office Politics Overcome The Office Shark Politics Again Jeanine locked her office door and let her smile collapse. She was so angry! Ambushed again, by that jerk Pat. Why did Pat have to undermine everything she did? They were on the same team! But noâ¦each time she managed to get a proposal approved, Pat began talking it down, in public, to anyone who would listen Jeanine knew she had to put a stop to it. What could she do? Have you been in Jeanineâs shoes? Or perhaps I should say Jeanineâs swimsuit; Pat is a classic office Shark. Why Be A Shark? In the Political Animals framework, personal and positional power determine each personâs level of influence. Their behaviours determine what animal they are. The Shark is a classic high personal power/low positional power type. Compared to peers, their position doesnât give them much control over resources. Instead, the shark pursues power by publicly attacking coworkers. The Shark sees work as a zero-sum game. If you win, they must be losers. To prevent that, they undermine your project, telling anyone who listen about its flaws and your failings. Worse yet, they do it in the open: during management meetings, in the break room, and in the hallway. Play High Road Politics The Shark can lead you to doubt yourself, and can destroy your confidence. Donât fall for it! Two strategies can help you put the Shark in his or her place. Either swim around the Shark with good stakeholder management or hit back with facts. Stay on the high road: dont descend to the Sharks level of personal attacks and half-truths. Protect your most important asset: your reputation for honesty. Whichever strategy you choose, believe in yourself. Stakeholder Management Stakeholder management is an essential business skill. A stakeholder is anyone affected by your actions, inside or outside the company. Whether youâre keeping your manager happy or showing customers and colleagues that they can trust you, you are managing your stakeholders. Do it well and they turn into advocates and allies. When the Shark attacks, use these powerful allies who openly support you and your project. Sharks stop their attack when a senior person says âI disagree.â Good stakeholder management chases away the Shark. Jeanineâs project stakeholders included the Sharkâs department head, Margarida. If Jeanine had invested time in explaining her projectâs benefits to her, Margarida could have stopped Patâs sharking as soon as she heard it. Facing the Facts You can also confront the Shark yourself. It is essential that you stay calm while doing this! Confronting the Shark means playing politics your way, not the Sharkâs. Despite the temptation, dont call the Shark a jerk. Instead, present some unarguable facts supporting your position. State them strongly, without hedging. This is the figurative poke in the Sharks eye that stops the attack. When Pat said âI donât see any benefit to this idea,â Jeanine could have responded with, âWere you aware that we have already saved 10% in your department during the pilot project, and that Margarida endorsed expanding it?â Pat is not likely to keep attacking when itâs clear that doing so will be against Margaridaâs wishes; thatâs no way to build power. And Pat is definitely trying to build power! Turn Your Shark Into A Goldfish Donât expect to make the Shark your friend or ally. They arenât interested in you, only in themselves. Make it clear to the Shark that attacking you is a no-win strategy and the attacks will stop. Your Great White Shark will shrink to a goldfish when itâs clear that you canât be intimidated and have truth on your side.

It represents you as a professional: your accomplishments and what you can provide an organization. However, it can be hard to narrow your experience down to just one or two pages. Before starting on your resume, itâs helpful to create a master document with all of your education, past experience, skills, and accomplishments. Write down everything you can think of, donât leave anything out. This is similar to an accomplishments document, but this document should contain a running list of everything in your career. Itâs better to use this document to see yourself on paper before you start creating your resume. Create a master copy. While we recommend tailoring your resume to each job position you apply for, itâs helpful to create a master copy of your resume. Creating a base document will allow you to quickly make changes instead of starting from scratch each time. First, determine what kind of resume format is best for you as a professional. If you are applying for jobs in the same industry you already are working in, a chronological resume might be best. If you are looking to switch to a different industry, consider a functional resume. Set up the document, keeping in mind that the first part of your resume should grab the attention of a hiring manager. You may want to mention education or training you have received in your profile summary. This will allow you to tailor your resume for specific job positions more easily Avoid generalizing. Avoid using general phrases or statements that you might find in template resumes. Instead, state your experience and accomplishments with measurable results. For example, try to include action verbs to talk about your skills. For example, replace this general phrase âExperienced in computer programmingâ with âTrained team in advanced computer programming, gaining a 20% increase in overall productivity.â Using action verbs and measurable results will help pique the interest of the hiring manager. Make sure itâs relevant and keyword specific. In order to make sure the information is relevant, consider the job listing. What is the organization specifically looking for? Next, check your base document and determine what education, past experience, and accomplishments would make you stand out for this position. Then choose the ones that best represent you at this point in time. What keywords has the listing used? Make sure to include them in your resume along with an example to show how you have used that keyword successfully in your career. While you donât want to over embellish or lie on your resume, find the link between your skills and what the organization is looking for.
